It’s A String Thing 287 and 286: Easter Edition

A couple of weeks ago, Adele Bruno organized the weekly ‘It’s A String Thing’ challenge—number 287 in the series—in recognition of Easter. She created a string that resembled an egg to guide us as we drew the patterns she selected for us.

Two of the patterns (Hemp and Queen B) were grid-based patterns and new to me; and somewhat daunting to start drawing. However, Adele was generous enough to share some helpful tips with us for how to draw Hemp that also helped me to set up the base grid for the intricacies of the Queen B pattern. The third pattern she included was the floral pattern Henna Drum.

When I finished drawing the patterns all I saw on the tile was a jumble of black lines. As has been the case in recent weeks, adding colour gave this piece unexpected life and I really love the result. Although it might not be in the class of a Fabergé egg, I think it fits the Easter theme.

The week before, challenge number 286 included patterns that I truly enjoyed drawing. The first pattern, Mr. E is a favourite that I hadn’t drawn in a while, so it was nice to work with it again. TunnelVizion is now a new favourite. It reminded me of drawing a patterned called Hypnotic without the constraints of a grid. The last pattern in the challenge, Scape, was also new to me. I made a slight variation to make it fit the way I wanted it to with the other patterns.

To complete the tile I added metallic marker accents, even though I know they don’t show up well in photos because in person they add a nice sparkle to the tile.
